Of all the places in Europe, Spain was one of the top places I was excited to try for food. My family and I love Mexican food, which I know is not the same as Spanish food. BUT I had read and imagined what it might taste like, so I feel like I came in with a great idea! All the meals I had that weekend did not disappoint; one of my most favorite was on Friday, April 5, at Firebug Cafe. I had one of the best, freshest smoothies which felt nice since my friend and I had been up early that morning. I opted for a nice huevos rancheros, I figured it would be very filling, and it was! On top was a nice spoonful of sour cream, sprinkled with tomatoes and surrounded by green sauce, with a kick. It was paired with crispy tortilla chips. Definitely one of the best huevos rancheros ever, I was soo full :)

I used to not be a big fan of breakfast, but as I've gotten older I've come to appreciate a good omelette or waffle with a side of bacon. After spending some time in Vienna over Spring Break, I really treated myself to a nice selection of breakfast foods, courtesy of our fabulous hotel, Hotel Sacher.
Every morning that my mom, grandma and I stayed in Vienna we enjoyed a big selection of tasty breakfast food. I'll let the pictures do the talking :) Let me just start off by saying WOW. I never thought I'd like Romanian food, whatever "it" was. I again, assumed, that it would be very heavy and meat-based. I wasn't wrong, but I found dishes that I really enjoyed and would 100% eat again. For lunch on Friday, March 9, I started off with a bean soup paired with Romanian bacon. The consistency and flavor of the soup went well with the meat from my bacon. I kept it simple, and finished my meal with grilled chicken and potato wedges. On Saturday while we were in Brasov, we stopped and grabbed a quick dinner before heading back to Bucharest. I was so full from my meal the day before, but knew I wanted something similar, I stuck to goulash. I had tried my friends' and it was filing and full of flavor. This specific goulash was creamy and thick. It had some potato wedges as well as chopped pieces of beef. Paired with an Ursus beer, I definitely had plenty for dinner!
There's something special about being at the top of a mountain. I feel fresh and unrestricted, there's no pollution or anything above me making me feel trapped. Anddd, add in a nice refreshing beer (and fries, not pictured). The most perfect duo up on Mount Pilatus!
For dinner my friends and I really sought out authentic "Swiss" food. After attempts at translating, I think that the hash brown looking meal is an authentic Swiss dish. It certainly was filling and delicious, especially on an empty stomach. You cannot go to Switzerland without getting some chocolate. I am an avid chocolate lover, so naturally I had to bring some back to Italy! If you don't know of Lindt Chocolate, it is a Chocolatier originating from Switzerland. We didn't go into a factory or original store, but went to an authentic Swiss chocolate store, which had tons of Lindt chocolates. So yummy on our last day! I'll be honest, I had heard from various people that French food was not the tastiest. That doesn't mean that it isn't good, but I came to France almost expecting the food to be very bland. On Saturday night, February 17, we went to this cafe near the Musee d'Orsay. I was so excited to order authentic French food. We (Ashley, Morgan and I) shared escargot. Ashley had had it before but Morgan and I were slightly nervous. It was not as bad as I thought. The first escargot I ate was good but the next was pretty thick and chewy. I'm glad I tried it and now know what it tastes like! I also ordered French onion soup, something I really like back in the states, so of course I had to try it here in France! This French onion soup is by far the best I have had. It was crunchy at first spoonful and then turned to a nice, warm liquid halfway through. Once my spoon hit the bottom, I got a hint of cream based soup. I was shocked at how one bowl of soup could have such different consistency all while maintaining the same flavor. It was seriously to die for!
On my weekend trip to Venice, Italy I discovered how much I love Bellinis. Before going to Venice I had zero clue that the Bellini originated in Italy, much less Venice! A Bellini is basically Prosecco and peach puree. On Saturday's lunch, the Bellini I had was one of the best. It was pereferly pureed and had an equal amount of Prosecco and peach.
Later that night we went to a bar close to where we stayed and got some drinks. I ordered another Bellini. This one was more liquid-based but still very flavorful. This past weekend, I visited Budapest, Hungary. To be honest, I did not know a thing about Hungarian food, I just figured it would be a lot of food I was not used to. I think I am a changed person; the food in Budapest was so light, yet filling and delicious all at the same time. When we arrived, Friday morning, I immediately spotted this bagel shop right underneath where we were staying. I knew I had to try it! The workers were very friendly and spoke a little bit of English. Think of the best bagel you've had. Before Bagel Iñez Shop, my answer would have been from Einstein's or Old School Bagel in Norman. This bagel, the Manhattan style, satisfied my hunger but tasted flavorful and fresh. It was also pretty cheap. Friday night's dinner was amazing. After a change of plans, we literally stumbled upon Budapest Bisztró. Most of us had wanted to try authentic "Hungarian" food and had zero clue how nice this restaurant was. Our waiter was very kind and attentive; and the overall atmosphere was very relaxing. I'm starting to think Europeans really do not eat until about 8 pm every night, it was so quiet when we went inside. I asked our waiter what he recommended. He gave us a few options so I chose: Paprikash farm chicken with egg noodles and marinated cucumber. This was an interesting selection of foods all on one plate. It was very tasty and left me feeling full and happy. On Sunday, January 28, we ate in the area that the famous Budapest baths are located. I chose a light sandwich, and was surprised that there was no top bread. The salmon was a "spread" with three lemons on top. It was definitely interesting, with a strong flavor.
Most of my friends and family know how much I love food. For those who don't, let me just tell you a few reasons WHY I like food so much.
To me, food is not something I eat just because I'm hungry. I really enjoy the overall presentation of food, especially food originating from different countries and places I visit. I love comparing the taste of food I've tried while traveling, to the food I grew up eating regularly. Food, like fashion, is a form of art; I believe food is one of the best ways to express things like: feelings, national and cultural pride and a way to bring people together. Lastly, I really love good, flavorful food. These are the main reasons I started my food Instagram (foodsta) and this part of my blog! I noticed throughout my time at college, majority of my cameral roll was food. Instead of spamming my Snapchat and main Instagram story with food, I created my foodsta. That way any food I feel looks good, aesthetic, unique etc, I can post it nonstop. I'm excited to go into more detail about the food I try from different restaurants, cities and countries. Stay hungry with me :) |
